Reconstructing 3-Colored Grids from Horizontal and Vertical Projections Is NP-hard

چکیده
We consider the problem of coloring a grid using k colors with the restriction that in each row and each column has an specific number of cells of each color. In an already classical result, Ryser obtained a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of such a coloring when two colors are considered. This characterization yields a linear time algorithm for constructing such a coloring when it exists. Gardner et al. showed that for k ≥ 7 the problem is NP-hard. Afterward Chrobak and Dürr improved this result, by proving that it remains NP-hard for k ≥ 4. We solve the gap by showing that for 3 colors the problem is already NP-hard. Besides we also give some results on tiling tomography problems.

Reconstructing Binary Matrices with Neighborhood Constraints: An NP-hard Problem
This paper deals with the reconstruction of binary matrices having exactly-1-4-neighborhood constraints from the horizontal and vertical projections. This problem is shown to be NP-hard by means of a reduction which involve the NP-hard problem 3-color.
متن کاملReconstruction of Canonical hv-Convex Discrete Sets from Horizontal and Vertical Projections
The problem of reconstructing some special hv-convex discrete sets from their two orthogonal projections is considered. In general, the problem is known to be NP-hard, but it is solvable in polynomial time if the discrete set to be reconstructed is also 8-connected. In this paper, we define an intermediate class – the class of hv-convex canonical discrete sets – and give a constructive proof th...
متن کاملA decomposition technique for reconstructing discrete sets from four projections
The reconstruction of discrete sets from four projections is in general an NP-hard problem. In this paper we study the class of decomposable discrete sets and give an efficient reconstruction algorithm for this class using four projections. It is also shown that an arbitrary discrete set which is Q-convex along the horizontal and vertical directions and consists of several components is decompo...
متن کاملThe Reconstruction of Convex Polyominoes from Horizontal and Vertical Projections
The problem of reconstructing a discrete set from its horizontal and vertical projections (RSP) is of primary importance in many different problems for example pattern recognition, image processing and data compression. We give a new algorithm which provides a reconstruction of convex polyominoes from horizontal and vertical projections. It costs atmost O(min(m, n) · mn log mn) for a matrix tha...
متن کاملReconstructing Convex Polyominoes from Horizontal and Vertical Projections
Reconstructing discrete bidimensional sets from their projections is involved in many different problems of computer-aided tomography, pattern recognition, image processing and data compression. In this paper, we examine the problem of reconstructing a discrete bidimensional set S satisfying some convexity conditions from its two orthogonal projections (H, v). We develop an algorithm that start...
